The Awesome Mixes: Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 weren't the first - or only - films to incorporate older music into the soundtrack, but they did do something unprecedented.

The music of Vol. 1, comprised of former hits of the 1960s and 1970s, went to No. 1 on the Billboard charts, which was the first time a soundtrack, with previously released music, achieved such a thing.

Vol. 2 was almost as successful. According to Wikipedia, the second album went to No. 4 on the charts. By the end of 2017, it had sold 600,000 albums, a verifiable gold record.

Vol. 1 went platinum. Wikipedia says by the end of 2017, the Vol. 1 soundtrack had sold a whopping 1.75 million copies.

It's too soon to say whether the Vol. 3 soundtrack will see the same success. It was just released on May 3, and the music features more recent artists like Florence + the Machine and Beastie Boys.

Until those numbers are released, we're going to kick back with a Walkman and some Awesome Mix music.

Guardians of the Galaxy is now playing at the Jewel Theatre. Check jeweltheatre.ca for showtimes, and plan to come early to beat the ticket and popcorn lines.

See you at the movies!
